Claude Code: pick the model and effort
Three levers. The model, the effort level, and fast mode. Here is what each does and when I use it.
1. Switch the model
/model in the session, claude --model opus at launch, or ANTHROPIC_MODEL=opus as an env var. The picker saves your choice as the default for new sessions.
| sonnet | Daily coding tasks. |
| opus | Complex reasoning. |
| fable | Hard, long-running tasks. |
| haiku | Simple things, fast and cheap. |
| opusplan | Opus while planning, Sonnet while executing. |
| sonnet[1m] / opus[1m] | One million token context versions. |
| best | The latest Fable where available, otherwise Opus. |
2. Effort
/effort low | medium | high | xhigh | max. High is the default on most models. Set it per session, or with CLAUDE_CODE_EFFORT_LEVEL or "effortLevel" in settings.json.
- low: short, scoped, latency-sensitive edits.
- medium: cost-sensitive work.
- high: the default balance.
- xhigh / max: deeper reasoning, more tokens. Use when the plan matters more than the bill.
3. Fast mode
/fast or "fastMode": true in settings. Same model, same quality, up to 2.5x faster, at a higher price per token. For live iteration and debugging, not batch jobs. You can combine fast mode with low effort for maximum speed on simple work.
My rule
- Cheap model plus low effort for the boring stuff.
- Big model plus max effort for the plan.
- Fast mode only when a human is sitting there waiting.
